It is with great sadness that the History Department mourns the unfathomable loss of professor, chair, and friend, John Pettegrew. After a nearly two-year battle with cancer, John passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 29. The Department of History and the Center for Global Islamic Studies are pleased to welcome Dr. Ugur Pece as a new Assistant Professor with a specialization in Islamic World history. Dr. Pece comes to the department from Harvard University's History and Literature Program, where he has taught for the past academic year. Dr. Pece completed MA degrees in both Turkey and Greece before receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2016.
