Mourning the Loss of Professor John Pettegrew

It is with great sadness that the History Department mourns the unfathomable loss of professor, chair, and friend, John Pettegrew. After a nearly two-year battle with cancer, John passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 29. He is survived by his partner Tamara Myers, professor in the Lehigh History Department, and his children Nick Pettegrew, a current student at Lehigh, and Helen Keetley. John's colleagues, students, family, and friends will remember him for his warmth, his empathy, and the active role that he took upon himself to establish a thriving and equitable community for those around him.

A memorial gathering for family and friends will take place at the Lehigh Valley Friends (Quaker) Meetinghouse on 4116 Bath Pike (Route 512) in Bethlehem at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2018. Details will also be announced for a larger public celebration of Pettegrew’s life and career to be held at Lehigh at the start of the next academic year.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be designated “In Honor of John Pettegrew” and sent to Lehigh Valley Hospice, 2024 Lehigh Street, Suite 100, Allentown, PA 18103.
